Where is my stuff?
Just finished the Culture Code book this afternoon. Loved it!! It really helped me understand myself in many ways.
In the Codes for Home and Dinner chapter, he mentions that “Americans believe that home is where their “stuff” is. Where is my stuff? I’d say about 40% in a storage facility in CA, 30% in Buenos Aires, and 30% in what everyone calls the “executive closet” in Tulum. Only now do I understand why it’s so important for me to have all my stuff in one place. From an American cultural perspective, this is normal. And maybe if I had all my stuff in one place, traveling wouldn’t be so hard for me.
“Throwing out memories to remove clutter is off Code.” What did I do on my second to last trip to CA? Throw out all of my scrapbook stuff with the exception of photo albums, and donate a ton of old books. And I immediately regretted it, but my parents were getting tired of having my stuff all over the place, and they knew they would be moving soon (and did).
So I think I’m suffering from some kind of stuff displacement disorder. I would so like to get everything under just one roof, and a roof of my own. I’m tired of us renting, and moving around so much. I just need a permanent place.
