So what to do with all this?
Every once in a while, probably about each three or four weeks or so, I (briefly, I must admit) replay this list in my mind, wondering what I can do with all this. I am aware that this little sabbatical of mine will someday come to an end and I will at some point have to come up with something to do. Professionally, that is.
I decided to go with the term “sabbatical” a couple of weeks ago after hearing it from a friend, who is traveling extensively through Spain at this time. It seemed like the perfect term to describe what I’ve been doing for the past three and a half months. A sabbatical sounded like something serious, much more so than “happily unemployed.”
According to Wikipedia, “In recent times, ‘sabbatical’ has come to mean any extended absence in the career of an individual in order to achieve something. In the modern sense, one takes sabbatical typically to fulfill some goal.”
My goal? To figure out what it is that I want to do when I’m ready to go back to work again. That may not sound like a lofty goal, but it is to me. And I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to take the time off to resolve this. So once again, I’ll replay in my mind my list of favorite things.
And no, in case you were wondering, I didn’t just finish watching The Sound of Music.
