French press spiders

January 29, 2010

We were about to turn the lights off one night last week, when Agus discovered a spider. I absolutely hate killing spiders and insects, with the exception of roaches and mosquitoes, both of which receive no mercy from me. I know they’re both part of the chain of things, but I just can’t stand either one and  their presence anywhere near me is met with a quick slap or crush from a shoe.

We have two French press coffee makers that we don’t actually use, and they happened to be at hand, so I took the top off one and used a piece of paper to coax the spider inside. I put the lid on, and was about to take it outside to release it, when Agus spotted the second spider. Obviously, it was quickly trapped inside the second French press. Both spiders were released out on the sidewalk, where they hopefully found their way to greener areas.

So anyway, the point of this whole story is that it’s a great tactic to transfer bugs and things out of your home and back to their natural habitat.

Just a word of warning: for both your safety and the bug/spider’s, be sure to return it to nature ASAP. There was one time in Mexico when I scooped up a scorpion in an aluminum pot I kept on hand for that purpose, and then forgot to toss it out the door. A couple of hours later, I was doing some hand washing, and used that same pot to add some water to the tub, and tossed the scorpion in along with the water. Needless to say, I got stung on my hand. No big deal, but it was a bit painful.

Happy bug/spider removal!
