Wishing For a Produce Fridge

July 14, 2010

I don’t know why refrigerators aren’t sold with different configurations for the interior. Or maybe they are, just not down here. But then, I Googled “refrigerator with customizable interior” and came up with nothing.

Probably 80% of the food in our fridge consists of fresh fruit and veggies, and I have no way to organize them all without things rolling around, off shelves, and generally mixing with other stuff.

What a pleasure it would be to have a fridge filled with just produce drawers, all with adjustable dividers, depending on how much you have of one thing at any given time. I could get by with just one small shelf for beef/chicken/fish, and the door shelves for smaller items and bottles…and the rest full of produce drawers.

So considering that everything you purchase these days is customizable, why can’t you purchase a customizable new fridge just like you would a computer at Dell.com?

Any other suggestions? I’ve thought of getting clear plastic containers, but I’m not 100% convinced with the idea.

What a great idea. I wish I had different interior space too. You make me think of getting some clear Plexiglas cut for dividers at least.

I am appreciating my top freezer right now. We stack things on top of each other and they are fairly accessible. XD

Let me know how your Plexiglas idea works out. Sounds good!
I have a top freezer, too. It’s easy to keep organized, and I even posted photos of it here once!

I don’t know what other people’s fridges are like, but ours has the drawers attached (but detachable) to the shelf directly above it. I wonder if you could pilfer some of these types of drawer contraptions from some old fridges that people are getting rid of. Maybe ask at the appliance store if they have old trade-ins that you could get the drawers out of.

Good idea, Jb! We do have one produce drawer on the bottom, like most fridges, that are like that: they hang on under the bottom shelf. Thanks!

I do know someone who got about four Rubbermaid bins and used them for additional produce space in the refrigerator. One advantage was that they were clear, so it was easy to see what was in each one.

That’s a great idea, Michelle. I may just do that. Our fridge is a total mess right now, and I need to reorganize.
